Pediatric Occupational Therapy at Infinity Kids

Pediatric occupational therapists help children participate in their daily occupations, such as during play, with school activities, and in self-care to improve independence and well-being. Our occupational therapists specialize in the evaluation, assessment, and treatment of developmental delays in areas including gross-motor and fine-motor skills, social-emotional skills, adaptive behavior/self-care skills (independence with eating, bathing/toileting, dressing), sensory processing differences, feeding delays, swallowing dysfunction, and other genetic, neurological, and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Neurodevelopmental disorders are a group of disorders in which the development of the central nervous system is disturbed. Examples of neurodevelopmental disorders in children include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, learning disabilities, conduct disorders, cerebral palsy, and impairments in vision and hearing.

Sensory Processing skills we address at Infinity Kids

Sensory Processing is how our nervous system receives input from the senses and forms appropriate responses. If sensory systems are not functioning properly, the child may react poorly to their environment. A child’s brain develops from the bottom up, meaning they must have a strong foundation for further skills to develop on. The most important groundwork being their nervous system and ability to process sensory information from the world around them.


We have two hidden senses that function as building blocks for emotional stability:

Proprioception- sense of BODY PARTS
Informs us on how hard to grasp a pencil, how far away to stand from a peer, and how much force to use when closing a door (a child with poor processing may have trouble coordinating movements, grading force, and seek out input like leaning, bumping, crashing).

Vestibular- sense of BALANCE
Informs us on how fast to run to catch a ball, if we are going fast or slow, coordinating both sides of our body with riding a bike and swimming (a child with poor processing may be over-sensitive avoiding movement and/or under-sensitive craving movement leading to trouble with gross and fine motor skills).

Difficulty with sensory processing:

Difficulty with sensory processing can also affect a child’s reactivity or responses to sensory experiences, having them demonstrate over responsive (sensitive) or under responsive (not registering enough) behaviors. Self-regulation has become a popular term as sensory processing and sensory-motor deficits are on the rise. Self-regulation is how we regulate/manage our emotions/behavior in relation to demands of a situation. If a child has trouble with sensory processing, sensory integration, an immature nervous system, or disorganized brain, then their behavior will also be disorganized and/or dis-regulated.

Gross motor skills (Larger movements) we address:

  • Advancing from sitting to crawling
  • Ability to throw and catch
  • Kicking and jumping
  • Postural and trunk control
  • Overall coordination and balance

Fine Motor Skills (Smaller movements) we address:

  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Developing small muscles in our hands to transfer objects
  • Mature grasping of objects 
  • Precision, dexterity, and in-hand manipulation to color, cut, and bead
  • Dysgraphia

Cognitive Perceptual Skills we address:

  • Executive Functioning (paying attention, organizing thoughts, self- awareness, planning, problem solving, working memory)
