Teletherapy 101: What Parents Need to Know About Teletherapy for Kids

teletherapy for kids

What is teletherapy?

Teletherapy is therapy that is provided over a live video. At Infinity Kids, we can provide all of our services with teletherapy, including consultations, evaluations, and treatment sessions.

Teletherapy is very similar to in-person therapy sessions, but the child and parent/caregiver are able to participate from the comfort of your own home. Our experienced speechoccupational, and physical therapists have had great success treating children of all ages with teletherapy.

Benefits of teletherapy for kids

  • Ease of scheduling
  • Some children are more comfortable at home and may participate better in therapy sessions
  • Siblings or other family members may be more easily included during therapy
  • May be safer for children with compromised immune systems
  • Flexibility with changing to in-person sessions or vice versa

What do you need for teletherapy?

  • Computer, laptop, tablet/iPad, or smartphone with a webcam
  • Good internet connection
  • If recommended by your therapist: Table/desk and chair, open floor space, or items / toys to use during the session

What should you expect during a teletherapy session?

  • Prior to your scheduled appointment, your therapist will email a link to a Zoom video session.
  • A few minutes before the appointment time, click on the Zoom link. Place the webcam in a good location so the therapist can see you and your child.
  • Parents/caregivers will need to participate in some or all of the therapy session, depending on the needs of the child. The therapist may demonstrate new activities or techniques, and coach the parent/caregiver with how to work with their child. Some children may be able to work independently with the therapist.
  • At the end of the session, the therapist will chat with the parent/caregiver on how to continue the session activities throughout the week at home.
